Build a handheld device that allows you to navigate in the dark.
PAIR OFF & CATCH UP
Check in with your mentee to make sure she signed up with JAM.com
Take turns asking each other questions. Example prompts:
How was your week?
What's one thing you created or invented this week?
INSPIRE: Kid Inventor Anahit invented echolocation device for detecting obstacles in low/no visibility conditions and for blind people.
PROMPT: When you are building the Navigator today, think about what types of inventions might be helpful for someone who doesn’t hear or see.
DISCUSS/CAREERS: Doctors, user researchers, electrical engineers, product designers
WATCH VIDEOS FOR NAVIGATOR INSTRUCTIONS
Intro to Wearables
Play: Night Navigator
REMIX (if time)
Try swapping the accelerometer in place of the proximity sensor. How does this change the function of your navigator. Hint: try shaking your arm :)
Tray adding other Bits. What happens if you add a long LED. How could this improve your wearable device?
Customize your Navigator. How would someone know it is yours? Use stickers or add other craft materials.
DISCUSS WITH YOUR MENTEE
Something your mentee knew about the invention beforehand and something new they learned
Think of some examples that they have seen this invention in everyday lives (i.e., car cameras that tell you when you are too close to an obstacle when backing up)
When designing for another person, what questions would you ask them to figure out how to help? Discuss ideas (i.e. what is the hardest part of your day? What is one task you wish could be easier? What do you like to do for fun?)
Mentees go around 1 by 1 and share:
Favorite thing about inventing today
Something that was hard in this session
What is a question you would ask someone to make in invention that is helpful to them?
Make sure you have all the parts shown on the side of the box and put them away in the box for storage.
Note: your mentee will need to deconstruct part or all of her invention.
SUPER IMPORTANT HOMEWORK
Before next session, your mentee should go on JAM, select a topic that sounds interesting, participate in 1 challenge, and upload to the community. You will discuss it next time!
