*Before diving into the program, we want to get your mentee’s honest opinion on how she perceive’s STEM and STEM careers. Please follow the script we’ve written up for this first Logistics section. This way, we can ensure that the girls are not influenced by your overflowing STEM enthusiasm until after the survey ;).
Mentor Script: Hello, my name is _______. Nice to meet you! What is your name? We are excited that you are here for the Snap the Gap program. Before we get started there are 2 tasks we will work through.
Mentor Script: First I will read the program description. When I am finished, let me if you want to take part in this program. Ok?
Read Child Assent to your mentee [if you are mentoring more than 1 girls, read this individually to each girl].
Ask mentee to respond with yes or no. If YES, move on to the survey.
If NO, go to the site coordinator.
Mentor Script: Next we’d like you complete a short online survey. I have pulled up the survey and you can complete it here. Take your time to answer the questions. These should be your honest opinions. There are no wrong answers! When you get to the last question of the survey, I will provide you with a code to put in. Let me know when you get to that point.
Pull up the survey and pass over to mentee [CLICK FOR SURVEY LINK]
Last question of survey, tell your mentee their unique 5 digit code
Note: this will be provided to you by the site coordinator
Site coordinator provides a brief welcome and outline of the program
GET TO KNOW YOUR MENTEE
Take turns asking each other questions. Example prompts:
What do you like to do for fun?
What is your favorite subject in school? Why?
What is your favorite book or show? What do you like about it?
What type of music do you like to listen to?
What is the last thing you made that you are proud of? (could be a drawing, a story, a game with friends, a secret language, a dessert, a collage, etc..)
GIRLS RECEIVE KITS
Site coordinator will distribute Kits to girls
Girls create a label for their kit with their name and a drawing
Prompt: Draw a picture yourself as a STEM Professional
WATCH INTRO TO LITTLEBITS VIDEOS
LARGE GROUP OPTION
*This is optional. Discuss with site coordinator if you would like to do this.
Keytar jam session. When prompted by coordinator, girls will simultaneously play keytar together for 30 seconds.
Trigger the stuff protectors: When prompted by coordinator, girls who made stuff protectors hold them up in the air. Everyone who doesn’t have a stuff protector goes around trying to trigger as many stuff protectors they can in 30 seconds.
SMALL GROUP OPTION
Have girls discuss their favorite part of inventing, what was tricky, what they learned.
Make sure you have all the parts shown on the side of the box and put them away in the box for storage.
Note: your mentee will need to deconstruct part or all of her invention
For the music Kit, girls will use their keytar template again. If there is space available at the site, we suggest removing all the Bits and accessories from the paper template, but keeping the paper template in tact. Make sure girls have personalized their template so they know which is theirs next time.
If there is no extra storage space available, carefully take apart the template and fold in neatly in the box so that your mentee will be able to use it again next time.
SUPER IMPORTANT HOMEWORK
Give your mentee her JAM code. Please don’t lose it!
Girls must sign up for their JAM subscription at home with a parent. This will give them access to all the littleBits invention videos as well as other fun STEM content.
Prompt: STEM discovery — your mentee should browse through JAM between sessions. Next time you meet, she should come with an idea of which courses she is interested in further exploring.
Log Your Session
After the session, please fill out the mentor feedback form
