Kickoff Session



Theme: Intro to Invention

Time: 2 hrs

Materials: Mentors will need to bring a device (phone, ipad, or computer) to access instructional videos. Snap The Gap STEM Kits (Base & Music) will be provided for the girls.


Check In


  1. Mentors and girls check in with site coordinator

  2. Girls will choose a kit (Base/Music) upon entering



  1. Snacks & beverages

  2. Welcome speech

  3. Pair off with your mentee

Meet Your Mentee


  1. Exchange names

  2. Take turns answering questions to get to know each other. Here are some examples:

    • What do you like to do for fun?

    • What is your favorite subject in school? Why?

    • What is your favorite book or show? What do you like about it?

    • What type of music do you like to listen to?

    • What is the last thing you made that you are proud of? (could be a drawing, a story, a game with friends, a secret language, a dessert, a collage, etc..)




  1. Open up the Kits together

    • Use the instruction booklet to build your first circuit.

    • What is your mentee’s first impression upon opening the kit?

  2. Learn a bit about littleBits


3. With your mentee(s), go through the invention activities together


Group Share


  1. Air drum jam session. When prompted by host, girls will simultaneously play air drums together for 30 seconds.

  2. Trigger the stuff protectors: When prompted by host, girls who made stuff protectors hold them up in the air. Everyone who doesn’t have a stuff protector goes around trying to trigger as many stuff protectors they can in 30 seconds.

  1. Girls and mentors all gather for group photo in the courtyard

    • Everyone please wear your Snap The Gap t-shirts.

Closing Remarks


  1. Make sure you have all the parts on the side of the box and put them away in the box

  • Note: you my need to deconstruct part of the invention

Next Steps

  1. Girls sign up for JAM subscription at home. This will give your mentee access to all the littleBits invention videos as well as other fun STEM content.

    • Make sure your mentee goes home with a access code

    • With a parent, girls will need to sign up using the code
