Become a changemaker! Solve a problem for someone you know through invention.

Note: Session #5 is a continuation of the ideas your mentee came up with in session #4. In this session, your mentee will build a prototype, test it out, and make adjustments in preparation for the final showcase in session #6.

Invention: Changemaker Challenge

Theme: Empathy, Engineering Design Process

Time: 2 hrs

Goals for Changemaker Challenge Session #4

  1. Create a prototype

  2. Test your prototype

  3. Iterate and update your prototype

  4. Prep for Showcase

Materials:

  • Mentors will need to bring a connected device (phone, ipad, or computer) to access instructional videos.

  • Snap The Gap STEM Kit

  • Paper & Pens, Pencils, and/or Markers

  • Session #4 Sketch

  • Materials agreed upon in session #4 by mentor and mentee

CHALLENGE: Become a changemaker! Solve a problem for someone you know through invention.

Goals for Today’s Session:

  1. Create a prototype

  2. Test your prototype

  3. Iterate and update your prototype

  4. Prep for Showcase


1. Create your First Prototype

  • A prototype is a simple model that lets you test out your idea!

  • Use your sketch from session #4 as inspiration for your first prototype.

  • Don’t worry about getting everything right on the first try! The important thing is to just get started and experiment. Building a physical model of your idea makes it easier to share with others and collect feedback on your design.  This is a time to dig into the Bits and materials and start to bring your ideas to life.

If you are working with a servo in your prototype, check out these helpful tips and tricks!

The servo is a type of motor that can move to exact positions. Use the slide dimmer to control it

2. TEST

  • Come up with criteria for success

    • How will you know if your invention works?

  • Test your prototype

    • Once prototype has been constructed, test your invention to make sure it works. How well does it do its job?

    • Take notes about what works and what doesn’t. You can make changes in the next version. Keep in mind that the inventions might not work the first time; failure is part of the process.

3. REMIX

  • Now’s your chance to experiment with fixes and improvements.

    • Could adding a new Bit add important features?

    • Would craft materials make it stronger or give it a new look?

  • Test the invention again after a few improvements have been made.

    • Work with another person -  a classmate, friend, or your mentor. If possible, try to find the type of person you’re designing it for.

    • Ask the person you are working with what their favorite features are and what suggestions they have to make it better.

    • Use their feedback to create an even better version of your invention.

  • As your make changes to your invention, make sure you are documenting your prototypes are changing and the results (good and bad).

  • Continue to test and remix until the prototype is able to meet the criteria for success, or until the allotted time runs out.

  • How do they get better at the work they do?

 

Showcase Prep

For the showcase, your mentee will present the following:

  • Invention description

    • Give it a name

    • What is it?

    • Who is it for?

    • How it can help make life better for someone?

    • important features

  • How it works

    • What Bits and materials were used?

    • Describe how it works

  • Reflect

    • Favorite part about building the invention

    • What did you learn by building your invention?

  • Write down the answers and save them for next time!

STORE THE PROJECT UNTIL NEXT TIME

  • Check with your site coordinator about storing your mentee’s invention until the next session.

SUPER IMPORTANT HOMEWORK

  • The next session is the final session. Each participant will present their final invention at this time. Check with your mentee if there is anything else she would like to prep for next time.

  • If your mentee has notes and/or sketches documenting their process, make sure to bring them to the final showcase.
