Girls Scouts Sacramento Kickoff Event
On May 6th, the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California hosted a kickoff event with Girl Scouts from Sacramento and Yolo Counties. The event took place at the Sacramento STEM Center + Makerspace.
The event began with an introductions from Linda Farley, CEO of Girl Scouts, and LeShelle May, Senior Technical Lead at CNN and Girl Scouts board member. LeShelle talked about her background as an electrical engineer, and how she was one of few women in her undergraduate class. She emphasized that mistakes, iterations and failings can lead to success.
Girls were excited to discover their kits and build their first circuits. Mentors worked with girls to invent stuff protectors and keytars.
Feedback from a mentor:
“It was cool to see her figuring out how to put things together. When something wasn't working, I told her that trying a different order might work. She jumped back, taking the circuits apart and reorganizing the pieces until it worked. She was excited about putting together the circuits and making versions 1, 2 and 3 of her stuff protector”
Girl and mentors will meet for more sessions to dive into more complex inventions, learn about female STEM role models, and discuss STEM careers.
